"Invitations to all SC Students" - Reflections on Humanics - Jan 29, 1998

This column, titled “Invitations to all SC Students,” is part of a series of reflections written by Springfield College’s Distinguished Professor of Humanics Joel Dearing on January 29, 1998.Dearing was Springfield College’s Distinguished Professor of Humanics during the 1997-1998 academic year. During this time, he started a weekly column in the Springfield Student newspaper called, “Reflections on Humanics.” In his column from the week of January 29, 1998, Dearing starts off his reflection with an invitation to all SC students for 1) free lunch, 2) a chance to share their definition of Humanics, and 3) a chance to be part of SC history on Wednesday, April 22nd. As this is the beginning of the second semester, Dearing summarizes everything that he has done in his first six months as Distinguished Professor of Humanics, including weekly Humanics Luncheons, in which he has spots for 3 to 4 students to eat free each week, Dearing’s weekly column, in which he continues to encourage students to share their definition of Humanics, and the STOP EVERYTHIng FOR HUMANICS DAY which was to be held on day after the annual Humanics Lecture on Wednesday, April 22, 1998 from 10 am to 2 pm. Dearing’s goal for this day was to bring the entire college community together around our students to create an enjoyable, positive day. He goes on to say that he has spent a lot of time getting to know students in the past few months in Residence Halls, classrooms, and even the bookstore. Dearing finishes in stating that he continues to find ways to engage students in discussions on the Humanics Philosophy. He states: “you have three invitations placed before you. Will you take on the challenge?” Dearing earned his BS from Springfield College in 1979 and taught as an associate professor of Physical Education at the college. Dearing also coached women’s volleyball for 22 seasons (1989-2010). He finished his career with a win-loss record of 595-196 and a .752 winning percentage. Dearing was the recipient of several different Coach of the Year honors throughout the years
